Projects A, B, & C:
PROJECT A: Classroom observation. Student should observe a student (possibly a 6th grade classroom or an elementary classroom). Students read about child development at the age they are observing before going into the classroom. Students should fill out an observation sheet (as they would do for a college student-teacher experience). These can easily be found online and can be adapted by the student observing. An example of a classroom observation form that focuses on individual student behavior can be found at:
http://cornbeltcoop.k12.sd.us/PRINTABLE%20PDF/Classroom%20Observations%5B1%5D.pdf
Write up a professional observation report of your experience.
Obviously, not all of this information can be shared (ex:ample: is the younger student on medications).
MATERIALS NEEDED: Classroom Observation Form (adapted for appropriate use), Child Development: Early Stages through Age 12 by Celia Anita Decker Ed.D. (or a similar text).
PROJECT B:
Classroom assistance.
Student should offer assistance to a teacher (preferably in a classroom with 6th grade students). Student can offer help at the same time H & C is taking place or can go after their own school day lets out. Student should assist for a minimum of three days and should keep a journal of his/her thoughts and feelings, experiences and interactions with students. H & C teacher can provide prompts for these journal responses (ex: Today examine the layout of the classroom. Is there ample room for students to move around the room? Are the classrooms set up to allow for cooperative learning?) Cooperating teacher should provide feedback to the student at the end of his/her time volunteering. Watch “The Ron Clark Story” (rated PG) for homework (or a similar movie about teaching in difficult situations) during the time that the student is assisting. Connections between the challenges that the movie presents to ‘real life’ challenges that the student observes should be noted.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Prompts (if teacher chooses), copy of “The Ron Clark Story” or student should have Netflix access.
PROJECT C: Develop a Unit plan for your chosen grade level and subject. Include lesson plans, samples, materials , activities, rubrics, and assessments. Include all sources.
